War Games. Current and past hacking simulators and challanges

by Zebedee on Aug.14, 2009, under Hacking

I have known about a lot of different war game sites and have noticed that a lot of them have started to drop off the interweb radar. I wanted to start a link page to all of the known war games or hacker challenges.

These War games/Hacking Simulators are a great training ground for “noob” hackers and security professionals to learn the art of hacking without getting in trouble with the suits. Remember always have written permission when hacking systems that do not belong to you.

I have sorted them in alphabetical order and in three sections.  Offline Games(Live CD/DVD’s, VM’s or software) Online Games and Archived which are sites that seem to either be dead or not maintained. I have not played all of the games yet and do not put one site above another one. The one thing I have seen though is the offline challenges teach you more regarding every day tools that you would use in penetration tests. If there are any sites that have broken links please let me know and I will add them to the Archived section. The links purposely only point to the sites home page as the specific games pages seem to move around a bit.

What ever happened to NGSEC Games & Cert. NGSEC was a commercial site. If they went out of business, it’s a shame no one took over running the game.

Hey, I found the Pull the Plug wargames at http://semtex.labs.pulltheplug.org/, assuming this is the original, you might want to move it out of archive as it appears to be still active.

    Great list!
